The SonFlow SF80 series comprises the SF81 gasketed plate heat exchanger with DN80 connections. Flanged connections or unions for food processing applications are available. The configuration is selected according to the fluids, flow rates, temperatures, pressures and allowable pressure drop.
The port geometry and plate corrugation are designed for gentle handling of sensitive food products. The gasketed construction provides access to the plates for inspection, cleaning and gasket replacement.

New heat exchanger
Send both fluids, flow rates, inlet and required outlet temperatures, operating pressure and allowable pressure drop. For food processing, specify connection and cleaning requirements.
PHE replacement
Send a photo of the existing unit’s nameplate, photos of the connections and the available operating data. We will assess whether SonFlow SF81 or another series can be used as a replacement.
Plates and gaskets
Send the model, serial number, number of plates and photos of the nameplate or plate. For gasket selection, specify the operating fluids, temperatures and cleaning agents.
SF81 model in the SonFlow SF80 series
SF81 is the model in the SonFlow SF80 series. The plate dimensions are 380 × 1211 mm, with a horizontal port centre distance of 238 mm and a vertical port centre distance of 1070 mm.
The overall frame height shown in the drawing is 1447 mm. The unit length depends on the frame and plate pack. The number of plates is determined by thermal and hydraulic sizing.
Allow sufficient space to open the unit and access the plates for maintenance.

When to consider SonFlow SF80
KONTECH recommends considering SonFlow SF80 for heat exchange between a liquid food product and a heating or cooling fluid when DN80 connections and access to the plates for maintenance are required. The port geometry and plate corrugation are designed for gentle handling of sensitive products.
SF81 can also be considered for HVAC and industrial applications. Selection takes account of fluid composition and viscosity, required thermal duty and allowable pressure drop. Food processing applications also require clarification of cleaning requirements and materials in contact with the product.
The gasketed construction allows plate inspection and mechanical cleaning. If the operating conditions change, the possibility of adding plates can be assessed.
Typical applications of SonFlow SF80
- Food and beverage processing: heating and cooling liquid food products with a configuration selected according to the product and cleaning method.
- Dairy processing: heat exchange between the liquid product and the heating or cooling fluid according to process conditions and cleaning requirements.
- HVAC and refrigeration systems: heat exchange between water or water-glycol circuits under suitable operating conditions.
- Industrial processes: heating and cooling process fluids compatible with the selected plates and gaskets.
- Chemical processing: applications assessed according to fluid composition and material compatibility.
When to consider another series
For food processing applications with DN50 connections, consider SonFlow SF70. Selection between SF70 and SF80 depends on operating conditions and connection requirements.
For fluids containing particles or fibres, or fluids with elevated viscosity, the suitability of a Free Flow plate heat exchanger is assessed.
If the application requires different dimensions or a different configuration, consider the other SonFlow gasketed plate heat exchangers.
For clean fluids where access to the plates for mechanical cleaning is not required, SonFlow brazed plate heat exchangers may be considered.
Configuration according to fluids and operating conditions
Plates
SonFlow SF81 is supplied with plates in AISI 316 stainless steel or titanium. The material is selected according to fluid composition, temperatures and corrosion resistance requirements.
Frame
A painted frame or stainless steel frame is available according to the application, with a design pressure of 10 or 16 bar. The frame construction is selected according to process requirements and confirmed in the quotation.
Gaskets
Hang-on gaskets in NBR or EPDM are mechanically attached without adhesive. The material is selected according to the operating fluids, temperatures and cleaning agents.
Connections
DN80 flanged connections or unions for food processing applications are available. The connection type, standard and dimensions are specified according to the piping system and process requirements. Mating pipe flanges are not included in the supply.

Frequently asked questions
SF80 is the series designation, while SF81 is the model within that series. Either designation can be used in your enquiry. The specific configuration is selected according to the operating conditions.
The SF71 model in the SF70 series has DN50 connections, while SF81 in the SF80 series has DN80 connections. The plate geometries also differ. The appropriate model is determined by thermal and hydraulic sizing.
The port geometry and plate corrugation are designed for gentle handling of sensitive food products. Suitability for a specific process is assessed according to product composition, viscosity, presence of particles and cleaning requirements.
The construction allows cleaning in place (CIP) without dismantling the unit. Cleaning agents, concentrations, temperatures and procedures must be compatible with the plates and gaskets. The unit can also be opened for inspection and mechanical cleaning when required.
