SonFlow SF55 Gasketed Plate Heat Exchanger
SF55, SF56 and SF57 models for HVAC and industrial applications
SonFlow SF55 is a single-pass series of gasketed plate heat exchangers with DN50 / 2″ connections. The three models differ in plate height and the vertical spacing between plate ports. Selection depends on the fluids, flow rates, temperatures, pressures, allowable pressure drop and available installation space.
SF55 is the best-selling series of gasketed plate heat exchangers. Its construction provides access to the plates for inspection, cleaning and gasket replacement.

New heat exchanger
Send the fluids and flow rates on both sides, inlet and required outlet temperatures, operating pressure and allowable pressure drop, if specified.
Replacement of an existing heat exchanger
Send photographs of the nameplate and unit, along with the available operating data, overall dimensions and connection details. We will assess whether a SonFlow SF55 or another series is suitable as a replacement.
Plates and gaskets
Send the model, serial number, plate count and photographs of the unit, nameplate or plate. We may also need to confirm the fluids and temperatures to select the gasket material.
SF55, SF56 and SF57 models
The models in the SF55 series differ in plate height and the vertical centre-to-centre distance between plate ports. Each plate is 232 mm wide; the horizontal centre-to-centre distance is 126 mm. The model and plate count are selected according to the required thermal and hydraulic performance.

When SF55 is a suitable choice
The SF55 series can be considered for single-pass heat transfer with DN50 / 2″ connections when access to the plate pack is required for inspection, cleaning or gasket replacement. Connection size alone does not determine the selection. Both fluids, operating temperatures, flow rates and allowable pressure drop must also be checked.
The bolted construction allows the plates and gaskets to be serviced. If operating conditions change, the possibility of adding plates can be assessed, subject to the frame capacity and a revised thermal and hydraulic calculation.
Typical applications of SonFlow SF55
- HVAC and heat pump systems: separation of heating and cooling circuits where operating conditions are suitable.
- Geothermal systems and data centres: heat transfer between circuits after checking the fluid, temperatures and required heat duty.
- Industrial processes: heating and cooling process fluids compatible with the selected plates and gaskets.
- Food, beverage and sugar industries: thermal processes with a configuration that meets the applicable material, connection and cleaning requirements.
- Marine applications: cooling and auxiliary circuits after checking material compatibility with the fluid.
- Chemical and mining industries: applications assessed against fluid composition, temperature and the risk of plate-channel fouling.
When another series should be considered
If price is the main selection criterion and the operating conditions allow it, consider SF50.
For fluids containing particles or fibres, or with increased viscosity, consider a Free Flow plate heat exchanger.
If the application requires a different size or connections, review the other SonFlow gasketed plate heat exchangers.
For clean fluids where access to the plates for mechanical cleaning is not required, consider SonFlow brazed plate heat exchangers.
Configuration according to the fluid and operating conditions
Plates
SF55 is available with AISI 304, AISI 316 or titanium plates. Plate material is selected according to fluid composition, temperature and corrosion resistance requirements. Other materials can be checked on request.
Frame
A painted RAL 5010 frame is offered with a design pressure of 16 or 25 bar. The frame and applicable design pressure are confirmed for the selected configuration.
Gaskets
Hang-on gaskets are available in NBR, EPDM or Viton. Gasket material is selected according to the fluids, temperatures and intended cleaning method. Other materials can be checked on request.
Connections
SF55 is offered with 2″ threaded connections (BSP or NPT) in stainless steel or titanium. The thread type and material are specified according to the piping system and fluid.

Frequently asked questions
All three plates are 232 mm wide. Their heights, as shown in the drawing, are 498 mm for SF55, 798 mm for SF56 and 998 mm for SF57. The model and plate count are determined from the thermal and hydraulic requirements.
The frame heights shown in the manufacturer’s drawing are 639 mm for SF55, 901 mm for SF56 and 1101 mm for SF57. Overall length depends on the plate count. The installation must also leave room to open the frame and remove plates. Send the available dimensions so we can check the proposed configuration.
We can assess a replacement from the operating data, overall dimensions and connections. Send a photograph of the nameplate and, if available, a drawing or dimensions of the existing unit.
The bolted plate pack can be opened for inspection and cleaning. Cleaning in place (CIP) may also be considered where suitable. Cleaning agents and methods must be compatible with the selected plates and gaskets.
Possibly, if the frame has capacity and a revised thermal and hydraulic calculation supports the new operating conditions. This is assessed for the specific unit.
